In the springtime, after the denning period, bears start to search for food intensively. Attracted by garbage, compost piles and slaughter remains they sometimes approach human settlements, as well. Overturned garbage containers and broken compost bins are not the only consequence of bears approaching humans – habituation of bears to humans might represent even bigger problem. Beside bear-proof compost bins, we have delivered also bear-proof garbage containers to some of the conflict hot-spots in different communities in Slovenia (Kostel, Ig, Rakitna, Vojsko, LoÅ”ka dolina). In this way, we will prevent bears accessing anthropogenic food, and consequently decrease human-bear conflicts. First experiences and responses of local population are encouraging.
